Far from the Blood Vale, in the freshly conquered territory of Avaris, a roguish captain, a mage-scholar, and his mercenary childhood friend arrive to loot the tomb of a hundred kings. A tribe of Shikaree arrive to warn the foreigners that they are disturbing something meant to stay at rest.

Portasang.

After weeks on the road from the high country, Heschel Lucanius arrives at Portasang with his young ward Senara — a Knight of the Silver Flame with an old promise to keep and a debt to settle. The merchant city of the Blood Vale is a tapestry of small kindnesses and small knives. Senara sees the city for the first time; Heschel sees what the city has become.
